Urgo Medical explores the future of sustainable wound care through a dedicated eco-design hackathon

As part of its commitment to building more sustainable healthcare solutions, Urgo Medical recently hosted a hackathon in Dijon focused on the eco-design of wound care products. This initiative marks an important step in the company’s ambition to integrate environmental considerations from the earliest stages of product development.

Rethinking wound care through eco-design

Healthcare innovation today must address not only clinical performance and patient outcomes, but also environmental responsibility. Urgo Medical aims to rethink the way wound care solutions are designed by considering the full product life cycle, from raw materials and manufacturing processes to usage and end-of-life impact.

The ambition goes beyond incremental improvements. The objective is to imagine a truly eco-responsible wound care product that combines sustainability with the high standards expected in healthcare: safety, regulatory compliance, effectiveness, and ease of use for healthcare professionals.

A hackathon to unlock collective creativity

To accelerate this reflection, Urgo Medical chose the hackathon format as a catalyst for open innovation and collective intelligence.

The event brought together more than 30 participants from diverse backgrounds, including Urgo Medical employees, healthcare professionals, industry representatives, innovation experts, and external partners. Participants were supported throughout the day by SparkLab, innovation partner for the initiative, whose external perspective helped challenge conventional thinking and stimulate new ideas.

A jury composed of five members from different sectors also contributed valuable insights and feedback throughout the process.

The objective of the day was clear: imagine, from scratch, what the future of sustainable wound care could look like.

Exploring future-oriented solutions

Working in multidisciplinary teams, participants explored innovative product concepts that combined:

  • Eo-responsibility throughout the product life cycle
  • Practical usability for healthcare professionals
  • And forward-looking approaches anticipating future healthcare and environmental challenges

To encourage creativity and break away from traditional frameworks, teams were invited to project themselves into future-oriented scenarios and emerging societal contexts. This prospective approach helped broaden perspectives and inspired new ways of thinking about sustainable healthcare innovation.

Strengthening an innovation ecosystem

This initiative also highlighted the importance of collaboration between healthcare stakeholders, innovation experts, and industrial partners. Urgo Medical was pleased to count on the support of SparkLab and Santenov Dijon Bourgogne, whose involvement contributed to the richness of discussions and the diversity of viewpoints shared during the event.

Through this hackathon, Urgo Medical reaffirms its ambition to become a pioneer in eco-responsible wound care by combining innovation, environmental responsibility, and real-world healthcare needs.

More than a creativity exercise, this event represents a concrete step toward shaping the future of sustainable wound care solutions.
