Sequential treatment using alginate-CMC Urgosorb® and hydrocolloid dressing Algoplaque® HP in pressure ulcers (STEPS STUDY).
This multicentre, controlled trial was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of sequential treatment based on alginate plus hydrocolloid dressings versus hydrocolloid alone in the management of full-thickness pressure ulcers in elderly patients.
110 patients from 20 French geriatric hospital wards were randomised into 2 groups : the sequential group was treated with alginate-CMC (Urgosorb®) dressing for 4 weeks followed with hydrocolloid dressing (Algoplaque®) and the control group was treated with hydrocolloid dressing DuoDERM E hydrocolloid dressings only for 8 weeks.
Clinical, planimetric and photographic assessments were made weekly. At the end of the 8-week period, the reduction in pressure ulcer surface area was significantly greater in the sequential group than in the controlled (p<.001). This difference was already significant, in favour of sequential treatment, by the end of the 4th week.
This study is the first controlled trial which clearly demonstrates the efficacy of a sequential approach of the healing process, using alginate-CMC followed by hydrocolloid dressings in the local management of full-thickness pressure ulcers.

Urgosorb® dressing : management of acute and chronic wounds
The aim of this 10-patient prospective case study was to evaluate the use of Urgosorb® in the management of acute and chronic wounds. Patients were followed-up during 6 weeks with weekly evaluations. The assessed parameters were the effectiveness of exudate management and integrity of surrounding tissue, ease of removal, patient comfort, effectiveness of odour control.
The results showed that 50% of the wounds did heal during the study period, Dressing removal was considered easy in the majority of cases, and patients experienced none, or only mild discomfort. Levels of exudates were well managed and there were no reports of any adverse events.

Sequential treatment with alginate-CMC and a hydrophobe polyester mesh in lesions of different aetiology
The aim of study was to assess the benefits of a sequential treatment with respect to the care of exudates where a calcium-alginate CMC-dressing , Urgosorb® is first applied (exudative phases) followed by the application of a lipido-colloid dressing Urgotul® (granulation phase).
During this study, 27 patients with lesions of different aetiology were included and followed-up during one year. Parameters assessed were efficacy, tolerance, acceptability and use frequency.
The results of this clinical study showed that the healing was occurred after 72,2 days in chronic wounds; the acute wounds, healed after 18,3 days, and in burns the healing has occurred after 9,8 days. No local or systemic topical reactions have been noted during this evaluation and acceptability was also optimal.
This sequential treatment has been recognised as the treatment of choice by patients and working group. It can be used both in hospital, primary care or in home care.
